“I killed a man,” Matt Cordle says at the very beginning of a video released by an Ohio website. The 22-year-old takes full responsibility for a June car crash that killed another driver in the shocking video.
The three and a half-minute video features Cordle going over the details of the crash, in which he was driving on the wrong side of the road. Vincent Canzani, 61, was killed. According to CNN, Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien said that Cordle is considered a suspect and it will be up to a grand jury to indict him. O’Brien is looking to charge him with aggravated vehicular homicide.
According to The New York Daily News, the video was published by BecauseISaidIWould.com, a new Ohio-based site. Founder Alex Sheen said that Cordle used Facebook to contact him and recorded the video Tuesday “against all legal advice.” Sheen wrote, “His goal is to raise awareness about the terrible consequences that drunk driving can have on innocent people.”
At the start, Cordle’s face is blurred, but eventually he reveals his identity. “My name is Matthew Cordle, and on June 22, 2013, I hit and killed Vincent Canzani. This video will act as my confession,” he says.
Cordle continues, “I can't bring Mr. Canzani back, and I can't erase what I've done, but you can still be saved, your victims can still be saved.” He says that he will plead guilty when charged.
“I’m giving prosecutors everything they need to put me away for a very long time. But I’m willing to take that sentence, for just one reason, so I can pass this message on to you. I beg you... I’m begging you, please don’t drink and drive,” he tells viewers.
