A young man from Columbus, Ohio published a powerful video on September 3 in which he confessed to killing a man while he was drunk at the wheel.
The video, entitled "I killed a man.", begins with the driver's face blurred and his voice distorted as he details what happened the night of the crash.
“My name is Matthew Cordle and on June 22, 2013, I hit and killed Vincent Canzani. This video will act as my confession,” he states in the video, which was uploaded to his Youtube channel.
In the video, Cordle admits to having a drinking problem, telling his viewers, “I really don’t like the person I become when I drink.” He had been drinking heavily with friends on the night of the crash, after which he decided to drive home.
Cordle ended up going the wrong way down the highway and drove into oncoming traffic, striking Canzani’s car and killing him in the process.
Daily Mail reports that Cordle was a suspect in the crash at the time of its occurrence but he had not been charged, according to Franklin County prosecutor Ron O’Brien.
O’Brien also told The Columbus Dispatch that he received the finished police investigation early on Thursday. He will make a plea on Monday for grand jurors to indict Cordle for aggravated vehicular homicide, a felony that could carry an eight year sentence.
Cordle says in his video that he will accept full responsibility for what happened, ending his solemn confession with a plea for his audience.
“I beg you, and I say the word beg specifically, I’m begging you, please don’t drink and drive. Don’t make the same excuses that I did,” he says.
“I can’t bring Mr. Canzani back and I can’t erase what I've done, but you can still be saved. Your victims can still be saved.”
