Pastor Terry Jones was arrested before he had a chance to burn thousands of copies of the Quran.

The Florida pastor had planned on burning 2,998 copies of the Muslim holy book, Quran, TIME reports.

Jones was going to burn one copy for each victim of the September 11 terrorist attacks. But before he could, the 61-year-old pastor and Marvin Sapp, Jr., Jones' associate pastor, were arrested on felony and misdemeanor charges. The felony count was for unlawful conveyance of fuel and the unlawful open-carry of a firearm is a misdemeanor.

According to The Associated Press, the pastor had set up a barbeque-style grill where he had planned to burn Qurans that had been soaked in kerosene.

Jones is a pastor at a small Florida evangelical Christian church and has been in the news before. In 2010, he had planned to burn a single Quran for the 9/11 anniversary, but eventually backed off.

The following year, however, his congregation burned the Quran. In 2011, he promoted a anti-Muslim film.

Each action from Jones has resulted in a violent response in the Middle East.
