New York police were trying to shoot a disturbed man a block from Times Square Saturday night, but accidentally hit two bystanders instead.
The man, 35-year-old Glen Broadnax had been weaving through traffic and had also reportedly lay down in the middle of an intersection Saturday night.
Witnesses at the scene told the New York Post that something did not seem right about Broadnax at the time of the incident.
“The police literally could not control him. He had to be on something, like narcotics or bath salts,” witness Fabiola Ferere said.
When police confronted him, Broadnax dodged all attempts to try and take him into custody.
"At some time he reached into his pocket, took out his hand and simulated as if he was shooting at them," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told CNN.
Thinking that Broadnax had a gun, two officers then pulled out their guns and fired a total of three shots at him, missing him each time. He was unarmed.
Instead, 54-year-old Theodora Ray was struck in the leg, fracturing two of her bones and 35-year-old Sahara Khoshakhlagh suffered a graze wound to the buttock, according to The New York Post. They were both taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Hospital officials told CNN that Ray was in stable condition and that Khoshakhlagh was released from the hospital before Sunday morning.
Broadnax was eventually taken down by police using a Taser and was taken into custody. CNN reports that he has been charged with menacing, obstructing governmental administration, riot, criminal possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, according to a NYPD statement released Sunday morning.
