President Barack Obama delivered a clear message on Monday that he would not negotiate with Republicans who threaten to send the country into another recession if the Affordable Care Act is not repealed.
The National Journal quoted Obama, “I cannot remember a time when one faction of one party promises economic chaos if it can’t get 100 percent of what it wants.”
If Obama does not receive a new budget from Congress by the end of the month, the government would be forced to partly shut down--an event that would throw the economy into backlash. To stop the Affordable Care Act, Republicans are considering stalling budget plans in the House of Representatives to use as leverage.
Obama stated, “In case there’s any confusion, I will not negotiate over whether or not America keeps its word and meets its obligations [...] This country has worked too hard for too long to dig out of a crisis just to see their elected representatives here in Washington purposely cause another crisis,” reports CBS News.
The president addressed the many steps his administration has taken to pull the economy out of recession. He cited upheavals in the United States’ tax system, health care structure, and Wall Street regulations. Using examples of economic recovery, he slammed Republican for risking America’s economic progress for political motives.
The government’s current budget expires the first of October.
