President of the United States, Barrack Obama, announced on Friday, plans to address the nation about a possible Syrian military strike on Tuesday.
Obama’s plan to strike Syria has faced opposition from both democrats and republicans alike. Internationally, Russia and China have also expressed their resistance, reports NBC News .
Obama and Secretary of State, John Kerry, are currently trying to garner support for a military strike in Syria, deeming it a necessary reaction to the Damascus chemical gas attack which they link to the Syrian government. However, many believe that taking military action in Syria marks the United State’s first step into another war in the Middle East.
“This would not be another Iraq or Afghanistan,” Obama continued, “Any action we take would be limited, both in time and scope--designed to deter the Syrian government from gassing its own people again and degrade its ability to do so,” The Independent reported.
Kerry is meeting with European Union officials today to garner international support for a Syrian airstrike.
