Divers in Oklahoma found two cars sitting at the bottom of a lake on Wednesday after police were conducting a training exercise with new equipment.
Two rusted cars were pulled from Foss Lake in Cluster County, Oklahoma on Wednesday a week after members of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol were testing new sonar equipment in the lake and detected something in the depths. The two cars were identified as a 1950s Chevrolet and a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro, according to the New York Daily News.
The two cars were found side by side, submerged in 12 feet of murky water. Inside the cars, police found six sets of bones and skulls, three in each of the two cars.
The remains found in the lake may help solve two separate mysteries that have haunted the town of Sayre for decades.
Investigators told CNN that they believe that one of the two cars may be linked to the 1970 disappearances of a teenager and two friends. The other car may be linked to the disappearances of a grandfather, his sibling, and his friend, which dates back to the 1960s.
“We're hoping these individuals, that this is going to bring some sort of closure to some families out there who have been waiting to hear about missing people," police spokeswoman Betsy Randolph told the New York Daily News. "If that's the case, then we're thrilled we were able to bring some sort of closure to those families."
Nothing has been confirmed by police yet in regards to whether the remains found are indeed the missing persons. They said that the process of identifying the remains could take years.
