Singer Sara Bareilles commented on the claims on the web that Katy Perry’s single “Roar” sounds similar to her song “Brave,” which was released just a few months before “Roar.”
Bareilles didn’t sound too angry over the comparisons, which fans started doing last month, when “Roar” was first released. Her fans suggested that Perry had stolen the melody from “Brave.” In an interview with The Associated Press earlier this week, Bareilles was happy about the drama, since it helped her song on the charts.
“I was stoked. I was like, `Great,’” she said Tuesday. “I was like, `You guys want to go get (mad) about something and buy my music, that's great.'”
While “Roar” did peak at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, “Brave” suddenly reached No. 31 after the drama began. The song, first released in April, has now been certified gold.
“I don't feel like anything was taken from me artistically. I wasn't the one having any problems with it,” Bareilles said, adding that she’s friends with Perry. “We are friends and she and I spoke about it. I look at it as two female artists who are releasing a message of empowerment."
The only part of the ordeal that disappointed her was how nasty some fans became online. “I don't promote drama in my life and competition and stuff like that,” she said.
“Brave” is featured on Bareilles’ The Blessed Unrest, which came out in July. She starts a solo tour next month in Boston.
