R-rated animated comedies are few and far between these days, but if anyone can get a major Hollywood studio behind one, it is Seth Rogen. The This Is The End star and his writing partner, Evan Goldberg, have sold Sausage Party, a raunchy animated comedy, to Sony.

Sony Pictures is set to co-produce the film with Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures, reports Variety. Monsters Vs. Aliens director Conrad Vernon will co-direct with Greg Tiernan. The producers are Rogen, Goldberg, Ellison and Vernon, while This Is The End co-star Jonah Hill will be among the executive producers.

The film will center on food - a sausage falls out of a shopping cart and decides to go on a journey to discover the meaning of his life. He makes friends and they try to get back to a supermarket before July 4th.

Sony, Rogen and Goldberg previously worked together on This Is The End, which turned into a modest hit this summer, grossing $100 million domestically.

“We’re thrilled to be back in business with Seth and Evan. This project has all the irreverent, insightful and risqué R-rated humor we have come to expect from them,” Hannah Minghella, president of production at Columbia Pictures, stated, reports TheWrap. “Matching their unique comic sensibility with an animated film is a fun and inspired idea. We are confident Seth, Evan, Conrad and Greg will deliver one of the most memorable animated movies of all time.”

The voice cast wasn’t announced, but if Rogen could talk people like James Franco, Hill, Paul Rudd and Emma Watson into starring in This Is The End, he could probably get more A-listers to lend their voices to Sausage Party.
