There’s no doubt that the release of Grand Theft Auto V was highly-anticipated by avid video game fans, but three Staten Island men took it to a whole new level when they actually broke the law in order to ensure they got the game before others could.
Kirolos Abdel Sayed, 19, Matthew Kirshen, 20, and Frank Santanastoso, 19, impersonated police officers in order to cut the line at the Staten Island Mall just after midnight on Tuesday. They arrived in what they tried to pass off as an unmarked police cruiser, complete with lights and sirens.
However, Daily News notes their plan was foiled when they got caught by actual cops.
In an attempt to try to prove they were cops, Sayed and Kirshen showed mall security cops fake badges and Santanastoso flashed a tattoo of a police shield. It actually worked, and they got to cut the line of 500 people to buy the game.
When they left, they got pulled over for blowing several stop signs and making an illegal U-turn. They were charged with impersonating a police officer.
According to LA Times, Grand Theft Auto V made $800 million worth of sales in its first day of release on Tuesday, breaking Call of Duty: Black Ops II’ $500 million record.
