Today is Thursday, which does mean that we’re one step closer to the weekend. However, it is also Sept. 19, which means that it is International Talk Like A Pirate Day.
Last year, the holiday celebrated its 10th anniversary. It was created by friends John Baur and Mark Summers, who then contacted columnist Dave Barry, who mentioned it in a column. Starting in 2002, the holiday took off and it is now an international phenomenon.
If you’re not sure how to actually talk like a pirate, it does involve more than just yelling “arrg” all day and guessing the answer to the joke “What is the new Pirate movie rated?” Here’s one video about the basics of pirate speech:
Of course, there are plenty of promotions linked to the holiday. Krispy Kreme is giving away free donuts to anyone who shows up dressed like a pirate. The holiday’s creators have also embraced Black Sails, the new pirate show from Starz, which released it’s own “Talk Like a Pirate” video:
