Tokyo has been chosen to host the 2020 summer Olympics. The International Olympic Committee made the final decision today.

Other cities hoping for the honor were Madrid and Istanbul. Madrid was eliminated in the first round of voting, and today Tokyo beat out Istanbul with 60 votes to Istanbul’s 36, according to the Washington Post.

Tokyo, the capital of Japan, hosted the Olympics previously in 1964. The city and country are showing their strength after being hit hard by a 2010 earthquake and tsunami.

Japan’s Prime Minster, Shinzo Abe, assured the IOC that the leak at the Fukshima nuclear power plant would not be a problem for the Olympics. He said, according to CBS, “Let me assure you the situation is under control… there are not health related problems until now, nor will there be in the future.”

The Tokyo delegation was elated when they heard the news today. When IOC the announced the decision, the Tokyo members cheered and embraced in the crowded hotel room in Buenos Aires, where the deliberations had taken place.
