Toyota announced a recall of 615,000 dangerous Sienna minivans due to transmission issues.
According to CNN Money, models from the years 2004, 2005 and 2007 through 2009 are being recalled.
In several of these vehicles, the shift lever was defective and caused the minivans to shift out of park without a driver ever touching their foot to the brake pedal. This posed a problem as affected vehicles could roll away, even when put in park.
Toyota spokeswoman Cindy Knight claims that a driver has to manually push the shift lever – it won't shift out of park on its own, reports USA Today. However, with the shift lock solenoid not working properly, it is easy to bump the lever. If unprepared, an accident could ensue.
At least 21 accidents have already been caused by this issue, resulting in two minor injuries. No deaths have been reported as a result of the malfunctioned vehicles.
Owners of the defective vehicles will receive information in the mail about how to get their minivans fixed.
