Young actors are expanding their resumes and starting to take over the film industry. Two of this week’s new releases are written, directed and star actors in their early thirties. Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s ideas are being brought to life with the release of his new romantic comedy.
A ladies man with a porn addiction falls for an old fashioned girl in Don Jon. The two struggle in their relationship with their conflicting lifestyles and old school beliefs. Joseph Gordon-Levitt wrote, directed and stars in the one hour and twenty-nine minute romantic comedy alongside Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore and Tony Danza. The film is rated R for sex, nudity, language and drugs.
An invention that was thought to be destroyed is wreaking havoc in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. In the sequel to the 2009 film, Flint Lockwood’s machine that turned weather into food is now combining animals into food. He and his friends go on a mission to save the world from tacodiles, cheespiders and shrimpanzees among other things. The one hour and thirty-five minute animated film is rated PG. It’s available in 2D and 3D theaters.
A flight attendant goes to great lengths to get engaged before her sister’s wedding in Baggage Claim. Without even a boyfriend and only a month to go, she sets out to nab man, with the help of her friends, by purposely running into her exes. The PG-13 film stars Paula Patton, Derek Luke, Taye Diggs, Jill Scott, Adam Brody, Tia Mowry, La La Anthony, Christina Milian, and Djimon Hounsou. The romantic comedy playing for one hour and thirty-six minutes.
The love life of a high school nerd is explored in The Secret Lives of Dorks. When the head cheerleader realizes one of the dorkiest guys in school has a crush on her, she tries to convince him to date another geek. The PG-13 comedy plays for one hour and thirty-two minutes. It’s available in limited theaters.
The secrets of a quiet, tight-knit family are exposed in the horror film We Are What We Are. When the matriarch of the family dies during a rain storm, the two young daughters must take on her grim responsibilities. The one hour and forty minute film is rated R for violence, sex, nudity and language.
The loss of their only child sends a couple reeling in Morning. The drama develops over a period of five days as the two struggle and cope with their grief in different ways. Jeanne Tripplehorn, Leland Orser, Laura Linney, Elliott Gould, Kyle Chandler and Jason Ritter star in the one hour and thirty minute drama. The limited released film is rated R for sex.
James Franco wrote, directed and stars in As I Lay Dying. The limited released film is based on William Faulkner’s popular novel about a family’s difficult journey through Mississippi to bring the body of their matriarch home for burial. The unrated drama costars Danny McBride and Tim Blake Nelson. It runs for two hours.
The music of Metallica helps tell the story of a young roadie on a mission in Metallica Through the Never. The musical action film features performances by the legendary rock band. It plays for one hour and thirty-two minutes and is rated R for language and violence. The film is available in IMAX 3D and expands to more theaters on Oct. 4.
Emile Zola’s novel Thérèse Raquin hits the big screen as Therse. It’s the story of a lovelorn young woman who was forced to marry her sick cousin. Her passion is unleashed when her husband’s friend comes to visit, resulting an intense affair and even death. The limited released film stars Elizabeth Olsen, Jessica Lange and Tom Felton. The dramatic thriller runs for one hour and forty-two minutes.
The unlikely friendship between playwright and actor Sam Shepard and Johnny Dark is explored in Shepard & Dark. The two are not only close friends, but they also married into the same family. While one man lived a life of riches and fame, the other was more secluded. The limited released film shares their family photos and personal letters to each other. The one hour and twenty-nine minute documentary is unrated.
Mystery and suspense films are only available in limited theaters this week, but next week, there are two thrillers in wide release. The latest from George Clooney, Sandra Bullock, Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake are making their debut on Oct.4.
