Transgender teen Cassidy Lynn Campbell was stunned when she found out she won homecoming queen on Friday.

Campbell, a senior at Marina High School, was born a male but always felt like a girl. In high school, she started taking hormone blockers and estrogen injections.

The Orange County student ran for homecoming queen to make a statement. "If I win it would mean that the school recognizes me as the gender I always felt I was," said Campbell, before the election, noted LA Times. "But with all the attention, I realized it's bigger than me. I'm doing this for the kids who can't be themselves."

There were 10 homecoming candidates, which got slimmed down to five before the day of homecoming.

During halftime, the five candidates were told to come up to the podium and balloons were released to announce the winner - Campbell. Students started chanting her name and she broke down, says WebProNews.

"I was so proud to win. I think it really shows the progression of the times," said Campbell, according to LA Times.
