Police in North Carolina fatally shot a former football player from Florida A&M University Saturday morning after he was allegedly only trying to get help after getting in a car crash.
Jonathan A. Ferrell, 24, played football for FAMU in 2009 and 2010 and recently moved to North Carolina.
According to WSVN, Ferrell had been in a car wreck so severe that he allegedly had to climb out the back window. He walked about a half mile when he approached the nearest house he saw and started banging on the door.
The woman answered her door and when she did not recognize the man, she called 911. Police responded to the breaking and entering call and when they arrived at the scene, they saw Ferrell close to the home. They allegedly tried to stop him from running towards them with a Taser, but when he did not stop, they shot him multiple times.
CNN reports that Officer Randall Kerrick turned himself in Saturday afternoon and was released Sunday on $50,000 bond.
He has been charged with voluntary manslaughter, a felony.
