Australia voters are gearing up to head to the polls this month that may see the Labor Party lose control and place Tony Abbott in power.
The Irish Times reports that earlier this year the Labor Party ousted its own party leader and the first female prime minister Julia Gillard in favor of Kevin Rudd for fear of being trounced in the upcoming elections.
Popularity increased slightly for the party, but too often, the Labor Party is seen as too focused on personal squabbles instead of figuring out how to boost the struggling economy or deal with asylum seekers.
A recent poll, by Newspoll, saw Abbott surging ahead of Rudd by 43 percent to 41.
This is not good for the Labor Party as Abbott was once seen as "unelectable" by many in his own party, Los Angeles Times notes. He was actually mentioned in one of the diplomatic cables that was made public by WikiLeaks. Abbott was described as a "polarizing right-winger" who has a "propensity for insensitivity and controversy."
Only just Saturday, Abbott publicly commented that men having more power than women may not be "a bad thing." He has also complimented a candidate on her "sex appeal" and said climate change is "absolute crap."
