Miley Cyrus' record breaking video proves that Vevo is taking over the world of online music videos, leaving its competitors in the dust.

In August, Vevo recorded 609 million video views, surpassing MTV with 261 million views, Yahoo! Music with 7.5 million views, and AOL Music with 8.1 million views.

Vevo was founded in 2009, backed up by Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment, which gives Vevo legal rights to play videos made by these large record producing labels before any other music video viewing service.

Recently, Miley Cyrus' Wrecking Ball broke Vevo's viewership record, recording 19.3 million views in 24 hours, a record that was once held by One Direction's Best Song Ever with 18.8 million views.

Vevo gives numerous viewing possibilities to watch content via applications on the iPad, Roku streaming box, Apple TV, and other devices. Vevo has also launched a live 24/7 music video channel, hoping to become the next generation of music TV.

Vevo is also expanding worldwide in places like the Netherlands, Poland, and Germany.

Google's recent investment of $45 million for a 7% stake of the company ensures that Vevo will be around for a long time coming.
