Yahoo has been struggling in recent years to stay relevant in the current Internet world, with Facebook and Google now taking over the landscape. Since CEO Marissa Mayer took over the company, she’s gone to new lengths to reinvigorate the company and the latest is a brand new logo.
In a post on the company’s Tumblr blog, Kathy Savitt, Yahoo’s chief marketing officer, unveiled the logo last night. “We’re excited to share the new Yahoo logo with you. It will begin appearing across Yahoo properties globally tonight,” she wrote. Yahoo even released a YouTube video showing the logo in motion. It features the word “Yahoo” in a new font, but retains the exclamation point.
Mayer also voiced her support for the logo on her own blog, noting that it is the first logo change in 18 years. “On a personal level, I love brands, logos, color, design, and, most of all, Adobe Illustrator,” she wrote. “I think it’s one of the most incredible software packages ever made. I’m not a pro, but I know enough to be dangerous.”
She added, “We knew we wanted a logo that reflected Yahoo - whimsical, yet sophisticated. Modern and fresh, with a nod to our history. Having a human touch, personal. Proud.”
The logo was part of the company's 30 Days of Change program, which featured different versions of the new logo on the homepage before the final one was picked.
Mayer has made headlines since taking over for giving Yahoo.com a facelift and then buying Tumblr for $1.1 billion. She has also become the face of the company, even posing for Vogue.
