Jennifer Mee, famous as the Floridian “hiccup girl,” is currently facing murder charges.

Mee gained national attention for a mysterious 38-day bout of hiccups. Sometimes hiccuping 50 times a minute, Mee was forced to stop attending school, Today reported.

Many thought the story was finished as well as her hiccups, but the Florida woman is now facing a first-degree murder charge for the death of Shannon Griffin.

Griffin followed Mee to a St. Petersburg home, believing she would sell him marijuana. Instead, Griffin was held at gunpoint by two of Mee’s friends who planned to rob the young man. When he resisted, they shot him several times.

Mee’s lawyer argues that his client was diagnosed with both Tourette’s Syndrome and schizophrenia, both diseases which would inflict her ability to make sound judgements.

Mee’s mother, Rachel Robidoux, ascribes her daughter’s acts partially to the hiccups.

She said, “Her case wasn’t a case of the hiccups, it was a curse of the hiccups,” and added, “All of a sudden people knew her name and she would talk to them on different chat sites, and they would act like they knew her when they didn’t [...] She’s very naive, and I just think she was getting herself into stuff when she didn’t what she was doing,” quotes The New York Times.
