Gravity is already earning stunning box office numbers domestically and overseas. Now Warner Bros. is about to get an extra push, according to a report that suggests China has approved the film for release in November.
Variety reports that Beijing News has confirmed that Gravity will be released in China next month.
Since China has a quota of just 34 imported movies each year, some in Hollywood were unsure about Gravity’s chances of being released there this year since the schedule for the last three months is already set. China Film Group is the sole importer of foreign films and the Film Bureau, which regulates the Chinese film industry, does have flexibility with the quota, though.
The film does include several positive references to Chinese technology and the film is in 3D and IMAX. China has the second-most IMAX screens, behind the North America market.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Film Bureau has not confirmed the report.
Gravity has grossed $123.4 million worldwide and won the box office for a second consecutive weekend in North America with $44 million. The film stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.
