Of all the movies that may finally end Gravity’s three-week box office reign, few could have guessed that the latest Jackass effort would be the one to do it. But that’s exactly what many box office observers are expecting.

Johnny Knoxville is back to his old hijinks with Jackass: Bad Grandpa, in which he dresses up like an old man with sidekick Jackson Nicoll and pranks unsuspecting people. Paramount is only expecting it to open with $16 million to $20 million, notes The Hollywood Reporter. However, others are expecting it to open north of $30 million.

It is the third movie in the franchise and first to have anything that resembles a plot, but it’s a formula that works. According to Box Office Mojo, the first film, Jackass: The Movie, made $64.3 million. Jackass: 3-D, released in 2010, grossed $117.2 million. It’s the first comedy to hit theaters since August’s We’re The Millers, so audiences may need a good laugh.

Gravity is expected to drop to around $20 million in its fourth weekend. EW notes that this will take it past $200 million domestically.

Captain Phillips should stay in the top five around $12 million, while Ridley Scott’s The Counseloris expected to gross anywhere between $8 million to $11 million. It has earned mixed reviews from critics and while Michael Fassbender has his fans, he hasn’t proven to be a big box office draw. Finally, Carrie is expected to fall to around $7 million.

Abdellatif Kechiche's Blue Is the Warmest Color opens in New York and Los Angeles, but the three-hour drama is rated NC-17. It will be curious to see if all the publicity from controversies helps at all.
