Jackass Presents Bad Grandpa finally stopped Gravity’s box office winning streak, but one of the big stories of the weekend was the failure of Ridley Scott’s The Counselor. Meanwhile, 12 Years A Slave is riding high on critical acclaim and made it into the Top 10.
Bad Grandpa cost Paramount just $15 million to make and stars Johnny Knoxville dressed up as an old grandpa pulling pranks with his young grandson. The film made $32 million in its first three days, which is a little less than the last Jackass movies, but still a great opening for an R-rated comedy, notes Entertainment Weekly. It earned a B CinemaScore grade from audiences, so the studio should be hopeful that it stays strong next weekend.
In second place was Gravity, which grossed $20.3 million in its fourth weekend. It is now up to $200.5 million domestically. Box Office Mojo notes that it should be on track to finish with $250 million, even though Ender’s Game may take away some of the IMAX screens next weekend.
The Counselor opened at a whopping 3,044 locations, but only made $8 million. The film is filled with stars, including Michael Fassbender, Cameron Diaz and Brad Pitt, but its mixed reviews likely kept audiences away. It was directed by Scott and written by Cormac McCarthy.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox spent at least $25 million on the film, so it won’t be a huge loss. The studio suspected that audiences just didn’t have a good grip on what it was about before it opened. Still, the studio is going to work with Scott again on Exodus, which opens next December.
Captain Phillips finished above Counselor with $11.8 million. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 added $6.1 million and Carrie made just $5.9 million in its second weekend.
12 Years A Slave bumped its theater count to just 123, but it still made $2.2 million, squeezing into the Top 10. It also earned an A CinemaScore, so audiences are loving it as much as critics.
