Peter and the Starcatcher is closing after playing nearly two years on off-Broadway and Broadway. The acclaimed production won five Tony Awards.
According to Broadway.com, Peter began its run off-Broadway before movign on Broadway to the Brooks Atkinson Theatre from April 2012 to January 2013. It is currently back off-Broadway at the New World Stages, where it began in March. Overall, when it closes, it will have 645 performances.
The play, a prequel to Peter Pan, was written by Rick Elice and directed by Roger Rees and Alex Timbers, notes Boadway World. It won five Tonys, the most of any production during the 2011-2012 season. The New York Times and New York Magazine included it in their Top 10 Plays of the year.
Producers Nancy Nagel Gibbs, Greg Schaffert, Eva Price and Tom Smedes said in a statement, “In the current Broadway landscape, a nearly two year run of a new American play is rare, so we're grateful to the show's many fans for embracing us like they have.”
The show recently began a National Tour and will play in Washington DC, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and in other cities. According to TheWrap, Disney has hired The Hunger Games’ Gary Ross to direct a film version.
