On the same day that Paramount confirmed that Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street will indeed be released on Christmas Day, the studio released a brand new trailer that plays up the film’s laughs. That said, it should come as no surprise that the film will not run for the Golden Globes drama category.
As previously reported, the Leonardo DiCaprio-starring film will be released on Dec. 25. It will be released just days after Sony’s American Hustle and joins the list of other Christmas releases this year. Other films due out that day are Ben Stiller’s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Universal’s 47 Ronin with Keanu Reeves and Warner Bros.’ Grudge Match. August: Osage County also begins its run Christmas day.
The new trailer shows off the comedic side of Jordan Belfort’s story, tracking his rise on Wall Street and the government’s investigation into his activities. Clearly, Jonah Hill is DiCaprio’s main co-star as he gets the most attention aside from DiCaprio. It opens with a hilarious scene where Hill tells DiCaprio he’ll quit his job to work with him if he shows him the $72,000 pay stub for his car.
Despite Scorsese’s knack for drama, the film will actually shoot for a nomination in the Golden Globes’ Musical/Comedy categories, notes HitFix, which means that the film leans into dark comedy territory. The competition in that category will likely include Spike Jonze’s Her and Alexander Payne’s Nebraska.
While it seems possible for the film to snag a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars, it will be more interesting to see if DiCaprio gets a Best Actor nomination. It’s a crowded field with Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave) and Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips) likely to lead the group of five nominees.
