An 8-year-old girl from Kansas City was hit by an ice cream truck that she was running after on Friday evening in what police are calling a tragic accident.
The incident occurred at around 5 p.m. on Friday when witnesses reportedly saw the young girl running on the sidewalk after an ice cream truck that had stopped to help a customer in the northern part of Kansas City. When the truck started to pull away again, the girl ran into the road in front of the truck and was struck.
The driver did not see the girl, whose name has not been released, before it was too late.
"I was getting ready to go pick my husband up at the airport and had just got down by the garage when I heard somebody scream, 'No!' and heard a loud thud, and I opened the garage and saw the little girl in the street," neighbor Connie Armstrong told KCTV 5.
Armstrong rushed to try and help as other neighbors perform CPR on the girl until emergency responders arrived. They brought the girl to a nearby hospital where she later died from her injuries.
Police said in a statement that the driver of the truck remained at the scene following the accident and was cooperating with authorities, according to The Kansas Star.
No citations were issued to the driver.
