The second episode of American Horror Story: Coven wasn't quite as thrilling as the premiere, though it set up some burning questions and plot points to be expanded on.
The episode started out with Misty Day in the wilderness, seemingly innocent, before bringing two crocodiles back to life, killing their poachers. How's that for a pre-opener? We had our jaws dropping when the crocodile devoured one of the mens' heads in typical AHS.
At Miss Robichaux's Delia gathered the girls for their morning lessons, but were interrupted by cops wanting to question Madison and Zoe about the bus that was flipped over and killed seven boys. Madison kept her cool, but Zoe couldn't keep her composure and spilled everything about being witches and having the abilities to flip the bus over. Good thing Fiona is a powerful witch and could coax the men to forget everything and not come back. Fiona was not easy on Zoe and called her the weakest of the bunch. When she told the girls that the only thing they had to fear was her we definitely believed it!
Speaking of Fiona, the big bad powerful witch kept Madame LaLaurie in her room with her tied up so she could seemingly interrogate her. The thing she was most curious about? How she was alive after all these years?
While we let that question settle we were given more insight into Queenie, who we learn comes from a line of black witches and is an heir to a house slave in Salem. In a flashback we learn she was a hard-working fast food manager. After a customer gave her attitude about wanting another piece of chicken, she stuck her arm into a grease pot and boiled his arm off while he screamed.
Madison and Zoe broke into the morgue where the boys' bodies were and told Zoe they were going to take the best parts from all of the boys, use Kyle's head, and build the perfect boyfriend. Madison saw bringing Kyle somewhat back to life as a favor to Zoe since she killed the guy who tried to rape Madison. Once the girls assembled all the parts they wanted to use, they chanted a spell. But did you really expect the magic to work and the perfect boyfriend to be made? Of course not. They instead created one deformed looking body and stuck Evan Peters' beautiful head on top. Madison decides to give up and go back to her car while Zoe "finds her cell phone." Instead, she kisses his dead mouth and who knew that would actually start the magic? Kyle came back to life! Oh, but after murdering a security guard of course.
Fiona tries to get more info out of Madame LaLaurie, and tells her she's been in the ground for 180 years. She tells Fiona the story about how she was told by Marie that she would receive her love potion outside, and is instead greeted by her family hanging dead. While she barely has time to take in the shock, she is forced into a coffin where she is told she was actually given the spell of immortality as punishment for her horrible crimes.
Once Fiona learns the information she pays a visit to Marie's salon. Fiona, clearly thinking she's the better witch, amidst racial subtext, and wants to know her secret to never aging. We loved how this set up the underlying conflict between the black and white witches and how even to this day Fiona thinks she's the better witch. Guess we're really about to find out.
Meanwhile, Zoe desperately drives a dying Kyle to the hospital and panics. Amidst her panic, guess who appears in her car? Misty Day! Confused, they bring Kyle to Misty Day's cabin where she heals him. Zoe knows exactly who she is because they learned about the witch who burned alive. Misty Day is fascinated by Zoe and glad to know another witch exists. She makes Zoe promise to return for Kyle when he is healed.
When Marie heads home she already has an inkling that the Madame is back and she pays a visit to the Minotaur, the mythological bull that was created at the beginning of the series. Could the human bull potentially be this season's Bloodyface? We're dying to know!
The last scene took place between Fiona and Madame LaLaurie (who Nan willingly set free and allowed for Queenie to get struck with a candlestick). Madame LaLaurie asked if Fiona was a witch and would kill her, but Fiona seemed to think not just yet. We gotta admit, we're a little bit afraid as to what these two would be able to accomplish together...but can they defeat the Minotaur?
Another plot point that went on in tonight's episode (that will most definitely escalade): Delia and her husband are trying to conceive but something is just not right. In a series of very intense sex scenes Delia summons her magic for help. We wonder if that will do more good or bad.
What did you think of tonight's episode, "Boy Parts?" Can you handle the anticipation for next week's episode, "The Replacements?"
