An Arkansas man was shot dead when he stopped to ask for directions early Thursday, police said.
Robert Franklin, 55, and a friend were visiting relatives in Chicago when they got lost on the West Side. According to sources for The Chicago Tribune, they caught the attention of a man down the street and allowed him to get in their car to point them in the right direction. The robber then told them that it was a robbery, and grabbed $400 from Franklin. He then shot twice in the back and two times in his right side.
According to CBS News, Franklin’s friend, who is his cousin, then took him to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Police spokesman Officer Jose Estrada confirmed that there hasn’t been an arrest in the case and detectives are still trying to figure out the exact time of the shooting during the car ride. It’s still not determined exactly where Franklin and his friend picked up the robber.
CBS News notes that violent crime has decreased in Chicago this year, but homicides are past 500 for the first time in five years.
