Paramount is working on a remake of the 1974 James Caan movie The Gambler, with Mark Wahlberg already set to star. Now, the project may have found its leading lady in rising star Brie Larson.
The Gambler focuses on Jim Bennett, a college professor who lets his vices take over his life, notes The Hollywood Reporter. Larson will play a collect student Jim falls in love with.
The original film starred Caan and Lauren Hutton. It was directed by Karel Reisz and written by James Toback. Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, possible Star Trek 3 director) is directing the film.
According to Deadline, Paramount is possibly looking to add Oscar winner and current American Horror Story star Jessica Lange to the cast. The site notes that the deal with Larson is in the early stages, but could be signed in the next few days.
Larson, who appeared in 21 Jump Streetin 2012, has been earning rave reviews for her turns in the indie dramas The Spectacular Now and Short Term 12. She also appeared in Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Don Jon. The 24-year-old also appeared on Community.
