Britney Spears' music is being used to help tankers ward off Somali pirates around the Horn of Africa. Her hits like "Hit Me Baby One More Time" and others keep pirates at bay.

The Washington Times reports that British security companies discovered that using her music helps keep pirates away.

"Her songs were chosen by the security team because they thought the pirates would them most," Second Officer Rachel Owens said. "These guys can't stand Western culture or music, making Britney's hits perfect ... It's so effective the ship's security rarely needs to resort to firing guns."

Owens also added, "As soon as the pirates get a blast of Britney, they move on as quickly as they can."

According to Metro, security is tight on ships as they must always be vigilant for pirates off the coasts.

In 2011 alone, there were 176 attacks around the Horn of Africa. In response the British Royal Navy always has 14 warships with 1,500 sailors patrolling the area to keep it safe for tankers.

"Pirates will go to any lengths to avoid or try to overcome the music," Security Association for the Maritime Industry Steven Jones commented. "I'd imagine using Justin Bieber would be against the Geneva Convention."
