Remember the “Twinkie Defense” used in defense during the trial of Harvey Milk’s killer, Dan White?

Today, Jamie Honohan, a neuroscience major from Connecticut College believes that she has scientific evidence concluding that Oreo cookies are as addictive as cocaine.

Assisted by a group of fellow student researchers and faculty, Honohan conducted tests on lab rats. The series of tests included setting up a maze, placing Oreos and rice cakes on opposite ends where America’s favorite cookie won, easily.

The research team then compared the results to tests on lab rats where some were given saline and others, morphine and cocaine.

Professor Joseph Schroder from the college told The New York Post:
“Our research supports the theory that high-fat/ high-sugar foods stimulate the brain in the same way that drugs do.”
Schroder also stated that the rats’ behavior “was equally strong for Oreo cookies as it was for cocaine or morphine.”

Honohan is using her research to examine the correlation between the obesity in low-income people living in and around fast food-dense areas, telling MSNBC “ high-fat, high-sugar foods may present even more of a danger because of their accessibility and affordability.”

Oreo has not yet released a statement in regards to this recent claim.
