Two convicted murderers were mistakenly freed from a Florida prison on Sept. 27 and Oct. 8 after an elaborate scheme. Joseph Jenkins and Charles Walker, both 34, forged documents that resulted in guards leading them right out of custody.
The signature of 9th district Chief Justice Belvin Perry was forged to order of reduced sentences and an immediate release for both men.
"It is quite evident that someone had some knowledge of the judicial system and how the judicial system operates," Perry explained, CBS News reports. “I think it was lifted off another document and placed on that document which is not hard to do.”
A manhunt is now being carried out to find Jenkins and Walker, who are now being called “escapees,” CNN reports.
Perry also told CNN, "People, particularly people with criminal minds, come up with ingenious ways to beat the system. They have nothing but time on their hands to think of things."
A review of Florida’s prison records has also been ordered to ensure other prisoners have not escaped using falsified documents.
