Cory Monteith’s estranged father, Joe Monteith, is speaking out about the tragic death of his son.

According to People, Cory’s father opened up about his heart break and lack of closure.

“It’s just ripping my insides out and tearing me apart,” Joe said.

E! Online reports that Joe and Cory had an estranged relationship. The last time he saw his son was two years ago, and it was his first meeting with Cory in eleven years.

Joe told the mag that his lack of contact with his son was due to his divorce from Cory’s mother, Ann McGregor, in 1989. He was forced to keep a distance from Cory and his older brother Shaun.

“One year, she even sent back the Christmas present that I had sent to the boys,” he says.

Cory had struggled with drugs for most of his life. His father also opened up about a scare when Cory was 19-years-old.

"He got a shot to his heart to bring him back, and he was told at that time to use no drugs of any kind because you had your one shot," Joe said. The last time Joe saw Cory, he promised him that he was in a better place. Joe recalled, "He said 'I wont go there ever again. I'm enjoying myself.'"

Although Joe doesn’t believe Glee’s tribute episode to Cory, “The Quarterback,” won’t bring him much closure, he does hope it will help others.

"I lost my son," Joe said. "He should have known not to touch that drug again...I don't want to see any parent lose a child over heroin."

Glee’s “The Quarterback” airs October 10th on Fox.
