Cults, New York’s indie pop band has released the video for their “High Road” single featured on their upcoming Static album.
After the band has released “I Can Hardly Make You Mine” audio on YouTube not so long ago, “High Road” comes as a second single and our second chance to take a peek at the album that’s expected to drop October 15.
The melancholic black & white video travels through Brian Oblivion and Madeline Follin’s heads revealing all these little symbols that make the video so mysteriously dark. The video starts of with a slow travel through Follin and then transitions through Oblivion to reveal static or white noise, which also happens to be the theme of their album. Then we see Follin and Oblivion sitting in a car without the driver and going down the “long road.” They travel through the darkness until the deer appears in the middle of the road. The other symbols include moths fluttering with their wings, levitating chairs, levitating windows with curtains that eerily float in the wind and fish swimming around it. The deer that appeared at the beginning of the video is now hanging on the wall. The car and the deer then go up in flames with Follin and Oblivion singing: “Should've taken the high road, now it's such a long way back. Instead I take the long road, figured I would simply be getting back.”
With “High Road,” Cults stick to their original 60’s sound, but this time woven with more melancholy and less upbeat than the songs on their debut Cults album. The video complements the song very well and carries the same notion of somberness and static.
