They are fierce and brutally honest. Their songs are rebellious, daring and empowering. They are Deap Vally- the daughters of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
Heavy guitar riffs, intense drums and raspy vocals characterize Deap Vally’s overall sound. It is hard to believe that they’re only a duo, because they sound like a band. Lindsey Troy (guitar, vocals) and Julie Edwards (drums and vocals) will win you over with their attitude. And trust me they have it and if anything, are not afraid to show it.
They have released their debut studio album Sistrionix (Island Records) on June 28. Which trust me, won’t leave you indifferent. Here’s what you can expect from it.
End of The World
This song consists of screamy and powerful vocals followed by slaying guitar riff. It is a real end of the world anthem, but not a literal one. It is not an end of the world caused by a cataclysmic event, but rather by a lack of kindness, love and tolerance. Troy sings: It's the end of the world/There's a thing I like to call it, sister/When you hate and you judge and you can't love each other…
Baby I Call Hell
Is a seductive, wild track with some very daring lyrics and dominated by drums. Oh, and have I mentioned, an incredible guitar riff right after the chorus? By the end of the track we can hear isolated vocals accompanied by the drums. Deap Vally does incredible job at transitions.
Walk of Shame
Is a track with an attitude. It happened and the girls say-own it. The track features dominant drums and rolling guitar riff that instrumentally mimic the walk of shame accompanied by raspy vocals.
Gonna Make My Own Money
Exudes with independence and confidence. And of course, it’s absolutely out of control, just like any other song on their album. The drums on this track lead into a very spirited guitar riff.
Creeplife
Heavily relies on a guitar sound and witchy vocals that escalate as Troy sings, You've got creep life/you've got creep style…. Then the song ends with a strong and kind of vindictive statement-You're gonna get what's comin' to you creeper!
Your Love
Is a wild, fiery and sensuous track. It consists of screamy and noisy guitar that creates a haze in your head as the song progresses. This song is sonically quite unusual.
Lies
Or as I like to call it a karmic statement song. It has that, you get what you deserve kind of attitude. Lie, lie, lie /And you look me in the eye… The song also includes narration, which makes it even more badass.
Bad For My Body
Is basically a song about being careless and reckless. It is consisted of a heavy guitar riff that transition into a more hovering sound as the song comes to an end.
Woman of Intention
Is consisted of dominant drums and lightweight vocals in the chorus that get heavier and more determined as the song progresses.
Raw Material
It comes as no surprise that the guitar riff is so raw in this song, just like the theme of it. By the end of the song there is suspense that progresses into a wild, ecstatic, loud section with overlapping soft chorus-like vocals juxtaposed with Troy’s raspy voice, which combined take the song to a majestic ending.
Six Feet Under
Consists of hazy, gloomy and resonating vocals. It is a less upbeat song that slows down the album, but then escalates by the end. There is a pause and then the track transitions into an acapella ending, accompanied by a tambourine. “Six Feet Under” the longest track on the album.
Overall, Sistrionix is a great album. It is fresh, brave and ruthless. Deap Vally has arrived with a bang and is here to stay.
