Disney really is mining its animated classics for another villain-centric live action film. The studio is developing a film centered on the 101 Dalmatians villain Cruella De Vil.

As we previously reported, the news was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter. On Tuesday, Entertainment Weekly confirmed the news.

The film is currently titled Cruella and will be written by Aline Brosh McKenna, best known for The Devil Wears Prada. Longtime Disney producer Andrew Gunn will produce Cruella. He has overseen several projects at the studio, including Sky High, Freaky Friday and Bedtime Stories. McKenna is signed to executive produce as well.

101 Dalmatians was turned into a Disney film in 1961 and is considered a classic in the Disney canon. It was based on Dodie Smith’s 1956 novel and turned into a live-action movie by the studio in 1996. A sequel, 102 Dalmatians, followed in 2000.

While it’s not clear if Glenn Close would be interested in playing the role again after doing so in both live action films, she is on as an executive producer.

Disney has been busy turning its animated films into live action since Alice In Wonderland became a box office smash in 2010. Kenneth Branagh is currently directing a new version of Cinderella, while Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent (based on Sleeping Beauty) hits theaters next year.

Would you like to see close play Cruella again? Or would you like to see the part recast?
