Eight people, including a two-year-old girl, were injured when a fire broke out in a west Los Angeles high-rise on Friday.
The fire blazed through the 11th floor of the high-rise after it began in one of the floor’s units, sending smoke up into the floors above.
51 residents have been displaced from their homes because of the fire. Up to 150 residents were not allowed to return to their units and are currently being aided by the American Red Cross, according to NBC Los Angeles.
More than 200 firefighters responded to the scene and were able to put the fire out within about 70 minutes of their arrival. Investigators are currently inspecting the unit where the fire originated to determine the cause of the blaze.
The two-year-old girl injured in the fire was taken to the hospital where she is in critical condition. She was found in the stairwell on the 23rd floor, unconscious and not breathing, and firefighters had to perform CPR on her before she was brought to a nearby hospital.
The Washington Post reports that the toddler suffered severe smoke inhalation.
Three firefighters also suffered injuries in the fire. Two of them received burns to their legs and the third one had his ear burned in the blaze.
The other four victims were hospitalized for smoke inhalation, but none of them suffered life-threatening injuries.
The only fatality was one family’s pet dog that died in the fire.
