Five people are dead after a stabbing in Brooklyn that occurred Saturday night. Out of the five victims, four of them were children.

Brooklyn police responded to a call about a stabbing in Sunset Park just after 11 p.m. Saturday and found five stabbing victims in total inside a residence, reports ABC News. Three of the victims, ages 18 months, seven, and nine, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Two victims, the 37-year-old mother of the four children and her five-year-old son, were alive when emergency responders arrived and were taken to nearby hospitals. One of them was taken to Lutheran Medical Center and the other was taken Maimonides Medical Center, both in Brooklyn.

Both of the victims were later pronounced dead at the hospitals, according to the New York Times.

Tragically, the father of the children arrived home from work Saturday night, only to find that his family had already been attacked and he was unable to help them.

“The father walked in and grabbed [the stabber] and tried to stop him but it was too late,” an officer told the New York Post.

The suspect, a 25-year-old man, was found and arrested at the scene, his bare feet spattered with blood. Early police reports state that the man is a cousin of the children, and that he suffers from psychological problems.

The names of the victims and the suspect have not been released as the police investigation is still in the preliminary stages.
