Even though it’s only October, the 2013 awards season kicked off in style with the Hollywood Film Awards last night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel banquet room. The awards are not taken too seriously and the event acts more as a dress rehearsal for future awards shows than anything else, but you can’t say that the stars didn’t enjoy being there.

The awards are run by Carlos de Abreu with the help of a mysterious “advisory team,” explains the Los Angeles Times. There are no nominees announced and many of the films getting awards haven’t even been released. Even Abreu hasn’t seen them. Somehow, he just knows that Julia Roberts deserves an award for August: Osage County and Matthew McConaughey should get one for Dallas Buyers Club, even though neither movie has been seen since they were shown at film festivals.

“I didn't see it. It didn't come out yet. They're giving [awards] earlier and earlier,” director Garry Marshall joked when he handed out the ensemble cast award to the August: Osage County cast.

According to Deadline, other winners included Sandra Bullock, Harrison Ford, Jake Gyllenhaal and Jared Leto, who all showed up. Sean Penn, Robert Downey Jr. and Jane Fonda were just a few of the presenters. Kanye West presented 12 Years A Slave director Steve McQueen an award before heading back to San Francisco, where he proposed to Kim Kardashian.

The big award of the night, the Hollywood Career Achievement award went to veteran producer Jerry Weintraub, who produced Behind the Candelabra.

These awards have no bearing at all on the Oscars, but it sure sounded like a fun night if you were there. You can check out the list of winners here.
