Two-time Oscar winner Jane Fonda will have some more hardware to add to her collection of awards. The actress has been named the latest recipient of the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement award.
“Jane Fonda is American film royalty,” Howard Stringer, chairman of the AFI's board of trustees, said in a statement, reports the LA Times. “A bright light first introduced to the world as the daughter of Henry Fonda, the world watched as she found her own voice and forged her own path as an actor and a cultural icon. Today she stands tall among the giants of American film.”
Fonda’s father, Henry Fonda, received the award in 1978. The 75-year-old will be just the eighth woman to receive the award, following in the footsteps of Bette Davis, Barbara Streisand, Lillian Gish, Meryl Streep, Elizabeth Taylor, Shirley MacLaine and Barbara Stanwyck.
Fonda made her film debut with 1960’s Tall Story and earned her first Oscar nomination for 1969’s They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?. She won her first for 1971’s Klute and another for the 1978 film Coming Home.
She currently appears in HBO’s The Newsroom and was recently seen in Lee Daniels’ The Butler.
This year’s AFI Life Achievement Award winner was Mel Brooks. Fonda will receive hers during a ceremony on June 5, 2014.
