Jennifer Hudson has managed to accomplish more than most in the business in a short period of time – she has a Grammy and an Oscar at the age of 32, not to mention a SAG Award, Golden Globe and BAFTA Award all for her role in Dreamgirls. She’s now promoting her new film, The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete, in which she plays an addict and breaking new ground.

Hudson appeared on Chelsea Lately to talk about the film and while talking to the blunt Chelsea Handler, she revealed she’s been sober her entire life.

"I love this new movie. It’s great because you play a heroin addict, which is the only drug I've never tried. You've never done heroin?" Handler said, which prompted Hudson to say, "I've never done anything, so that was hard to play this role.”

E! Online reports she continued, “I've never had a drink in my life. I'm sober. I'm like, ‘Okay, this is new to me.' Normally as an actor, you have things to pull from. I was like, ‘I don't know what it's like to feel any of that."

When the self-proclaimed vodka enthusiast asked “What are you waiting for?” Hudson said, "I've never been interested.”

Since she couldn’t pull from her own experiences, she decided to do some research. Hudson said she visited former addicts in a treatment center and that helped her immensely.

She told Billboard of visiting the rehab center, “I found one to connect to with and I said, 'I'm going to tell your story.'”
