Jet Black Sunrise’s new Capture EP is absolutely eclectic. It’s a little bit of indie pop, a little bit of synthpop, a little bit of indie rock and a little bit of folk. Capture is everything but plain and repetitive. Let’s be honest-variety is a lot more entertaining, but sometimes it might be problematic in terms of finding a focus and musical direction.
However, I’m not here to discuss the ways of finding musical focus, but rather to reflect upon sound and the whole feel of the album.
So, one thing’s for sure, this Boston-based indie pop/rock band hasn’t failed to astonish me with their virtuosity when it comes to switching genres and still making it sound amazing.
Capture was released on March 5 and features tracks, such as: “Can’t Wait To Start,” “321,” “Across This Country,” “Skyscrapers” and “County Jail.”
But these three songs really captured my attention and heart.
First of all, “Can’t Wait To Start.” What a beautiful and upbeat track. It was an absolutely great choice to open the album with this song. We’re talking, beautiful piano intro, later accompanied by lively drums, hazy drums, underlying delicate piano and soft vocals. Other great features of the song are its impeccable transitions and heartwarming lyrics. I don’t know if I can fix your heart/and I can’t wait to start…
“Skyscrapers” is a hazy and electrifying synthpop song, supported by drums that give it the edge, guitars that add to its airiness and vocals that breathe soul into it. It is such a stunning song.
And my last favorite song is folk classic “County Jail.” With its feet-stomping rhythm, playful acoustic guitars, breathy and choral vocals, this track is very Mumford & Sons in every sense. And I don’t have anything against that. It’s absolutely lovely.
Overall, Capture is absolutely remarkable, fun, diverse and playful.
