Henry Bushkin, Johnny Carson's lawyer, has written a tell-all book about the late night host where he claims Carson was a jealous husband and discovered affair between Frank Gifford and Joanne Copeland. Kathie Lee Gifford and Copeland have both denied the claims.
New York Daily News reports Bushkin says Carson took him aside and told him, "I have reason to believe my wife is cheating on me. I also have an idea who the son of a b*tch is that she's shacking up with." Bushkin says he offered to help Carson file for divorce, but he wanted instead to "find evidence."
They easily were allowed into the apartment as Carson was paying for it and Bushkin writes they found both men and women's clothing. The lawyer notes that Carson began to cry. "I realized that I was probably one of the very few people who had ever seen Johnny Carson cry."
He also wrote that the Tonight Show host has a ".38 revolver in a holster in his hip," though was unsure Carson actually meant to use it or not.
According to USA Today, Copeland told the New York Post that she didn't have an affair with Gifford, but Carson was "jealous."
The 81-year-old also says the gun part was a lie, "Please," Johnny was "terrified of guns."
On Tuesday's episode of the Today show, Kathie Lee says the story was untrue after asking her husband about it (the alleged affair supposedly happened long before they were together).
When she asked, Frank Gifford told her, "I can't remember! Maybe." Kathie Lee then added, "No, it's not true. That particular one, although we all know what the man is capable of, as you know."
