Unsurprisingly, Katy Perry’s fans turned out in force to buy her new album, PRISM, last week. The album debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 album chart, topping Pearl Jam’s Lightning Bolt and Miley Cyrus’ Bangerz.
Billboard reported that PRISM, which features the hit “Roar,” sold 286,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It is the best sales week for a female artist, topping Bangerz’s 270,000 copies. It is also the second-best sales week for a pop album, after Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories started with 339,000.
This is Perry’s second No.1 album, after 2010’s Teenage Dream, which only sold 192,000 copies in its first week. The album also sold more copies than the albums in the No. 2-9 spots this week combined.
Lightning Bolt, which started with 166,000 copies last week, sold just 46,000 in week two, falling to No. 2. Nothing Was the Same from Drake came in at No. 3 with 44,000 copies and Bangerz slid to No. 4 with 43,000 copies.
Lorde’s Pure Heroin was up to No. 5 with 40,000 copies (although its sales were down from last week) and Fifth Harmony’s Better Together sold 28,000 copies. DJ Khaled’s Suffering From Success debuted at No. 7 with 27,000 copies.
The rest of the top 10 includes: Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience - 2 of 2 (26,000 copies); AFI’s Burials (25,000); and Luke Bryan’s Crash My Party (25,000).
Lorde’s “Royals” topped the Digital Songs chart with 222,000 downloads.
