Universal Pictures has released a domestic trailer for its Keanu Reeves-led samurai flick 47 Ronin.

The new trailer for the film shows Reeve's character, a half-breed slave, joining up with 47 ronin, or leaderless samurai, ComingSoon.net. The movie is loosely - very loosely - based upon an actual historical event that is often popularized in Japan.

In history, 47 ronin took revenge upon a member of Japanese court who claimed he was assaulted by their leader, who was forced to commit seppuku for his actions. In the movie, Reeves and the ronin will have to do battle with supernatural creatures to achieve their goal.

Reeves is joined in the cast by Hiroyuki Sanada, Ko Shibasaki, Tadanobu Asano and Rinko Kikuchi.

Deadline notes that the movie's release date has been moved twice before. Part of the reason was due to the studio stepping in to prevent the budget from exceeding $200 million. The director, Carl Rinsch, and Universal were working together to do some reshoots and editing.

Reports had originally said at the time in 2012 that the studio had taken the film away from Rinsch to fix issues with the film.

47 Ronin is out in theaters Christmas Day.
