Miley Cyrus certainly cashed in on that marketing blitz. Bangerz debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 album chart this week, leaving Panic! At The Disco and Pusha T in the dust.
Bangerz sold 270,000 copies during its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan data, reports Billboard. It is her fifth No. 1 album, if you include her Hannah Montana albums, although based on her sexually charged antics, she might not want you to. Her previous album, Can’t Be Tamed, peaked at No. 3 with 102,000 copies sold in its first week in 2010.
Over the summer, Cyrus appeared to be everywhere, thanks to her controversial MTV Video Music Awards performance with Robin Thicke and the “Wrecking Ball” video. More recently though, she toned down for appearances on Saturday Night Live and on the Today Show. However, she did go topless for Terry Richardson earlier this month.
But let’s get back to the Billboard chart. Panic! At The Disco has returned with Too Weird To Live, Too Rare to Die, which sold 84,000 copies. It is one of seven new releases in this week’s top 10. However, Drake took the No. 3 spot with his Nothing Was The Same, which sold 83,000 copies.
Pusha T took No. 4 with 75,000 copies sold for My Name Is My Name and Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience - 2 of 2 slid to No. 5 with 70,000 copies. That’s a 80.08 percent drop and the largest fall for a No. 1 album since Kanye West’s Yeezus fell 80.26 percent in June.
The rest of the top 10 features: Lorde’s Pure Heroine (63,000 copies); Glee: ‘The Quarterback EP (47,000); Korn’s The Paradigm Shift (46,000); Cassadee Pope’s Frame By Frame (43,000); Mayday PArade’s Monsters in the Closet (30,000).
Lorde topped the Digital Songs Chart again with “Royals,” which sold 294,000 downloads.
