Audiences were outraged when Miley Cyrus took to the VMA stage twerking, sticking her tongue out, and striping down to her only her underwear. Now imagine the uproar if the controversial pop star had gone topless too.

The 20-year-old pop star revealed in her MTV documentary, Miley: The Movement, that she wanted to perform topless during her VMA set, but MTV wouldn’t permit it.

“You’re not going to be topless onstage are you?” Britney Spears asked Cyrus in reference to her upcoming VMA performance. “I tried but I don’t think MTV’s going to allow it,” Cyrus said in the documentary covered by Us Weekly.

The hour long special gives fans a behind-the-scenes look into the headline making singer’s life months before she twerked her way into music history on the VMAs.

Despite the vast amount of criticism her actual performance received, the “We Can’t Stop” singer is unfazed.

“We’ve been laughing about all the news, because everyone else is so serious. Its great. Because I’m sitting her laughing, meanwhile you guys are all worked up and frazzled. I’m chillin’,” E! Online reports.

Miley: The Movement premiered on MTV Oct. 2nd, but a deluxe edition of the special will air this Sunday at 8 p.m.
