Netflix is hoping to convince the producers of House of Cards into making a third season. The drama’s second season has not been posted yet, but the show’s first season has already been a hit, even winning an Emmy.
Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos spoke at the 2013 Film Independent Forum this weekend, giving the keynote address. “Our intent is that the show keep going for sure,” he said Saturday, reports Deadline. “It was a 26-episode commitment. It was not our intent that it just run for two seasons.”
Later, he told the site that they are in talks for a third season of the political drama, which stars Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright. “Talks are in progress right now,” he said. “So stay tuned.”
The series, based on a BBC drama, is written by Beau Willimon, who said that he didn’t expect the show to run more than two seasons, reports EW. He told Gold Derby earlier this month that Spacey and Wright both still like to do movies.
Sarandos also slammed movies, suggesting that television is the way to go for independent production. He also reiterated the company’s interest in releasing movies itself.
Netflix’s original programming earned 14 Emmy nominations this year, although it only walked away with one win. David Fincher won for directing the first episode of House of Cards.
