The first day of the United States government shutdown ended in yet another standstill, as the Senate and House failed once again on Tuesday to pass a spending bill.
According to CBS News, Democrats and Republicans spent much of Tuesday blaming each other for the shutdown. Neither side was willing to compromise on a spending bill either—Democrats were intent on passing legislation without any extra measures, while Republicans sought to degrade Obamacare and create more impediments against the health care law.
The House Republicans did present three bills on Tuesday: bills to reopen national parks, the Veteran Affairs Department, and city services in Washington D.C., The Associated Press writes. Neither passed however, as Democrats thought it unfair to open certain sectors of government while keeping other federal employees furloughed.
Some Republicans, such as Representative Scott Rigell (R-VA), expressed that they were ready to pass a spending bill without ties to Obamacare. However, most House Republicans, largely those with Tea Party affiliations or those who are ultra-conservative, seemed unwillingly to negotiate if Democrats did not make more concessions regarding President Barack Obama’s health care law.
