Noomi Rapace is going to get to test her acting chops in a new sci-fi film that will give her multiple roles - seven of them. The project is called What Happened To Monday? and will be directed by Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters’ Tommy Wirkola.
Max Botkin wrote the script, which landed on Hollywood’s Black List, notes Deadline. The film will have Rapace playing septuplets who are born into an overpopulated society with a one-child policy.
Wirkola said in a statement that he had at first thought of the protagonists as men, notes Variety, but then decided to give the Prometheus star the role. “Although the role was originally written for a male, I was struck by the complexities of having an actor portray seven characters and immediately knew Noomi was the ideal actor – male or female – to bring them to life,” he said.
Raffaella Productions’ Raffaella De Laurentiis is producing with Vendome’s Philippe Rousselet.
Rapace went to Hollywood following her breakout performance in the original Swedish versions of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy. Recently, she has appeared in blockbusters like Ridley Scott’s Prometheus and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.
She will next appear in Animal Rescue and Child 44, which both pair her with Tom Hardy.
Director Wirkola directed Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton in Hansel & Gretel, which was released by Paramount in January. The film grossed just $55 million domestically, but was a big success overseas, making $170 million.
